Surfing Challenge Kicks Off In Boca De Pascuales, Colima

1
Translation: Heido Sundstrom

The day finally arrived when surfers faced the Surfing Challenge to become masters of the sea. This past Friday, the long awaited competition kicked off in Boca de Pascuales in the Mexican state of Colima. The waves were powerful and between 4 – 6 feet in size.

Notable athletes from Mexico, France and the United States signed up to challenge one of the best tube beaches in the country; a beach that is no place for beginners when the waves are at their peak.

The challenge featured several minors who are all hitting it pretty hard right now, including: Jafet Ramos, Luis Rey Hernandez, Edgar Camarena and the youngest of them, local Alan Clealand. These young surfers are hungry to win and are battling against the more experienced veterans, like defending champion, Adan Hernandez, as well as, Dylan Southworth, Diego Cadena, Raul Medina, Julio Quiñones, Blas Bocardo, Abel Estopin and Jose Manuel Trujillo. We’ll see who wins—youth or experience.

The event also featured surfer Ana Laura Gonzalez, the National Junior Champion who is training to attend the World Surfing Games being held in Ecuador during the first week of April.

During the first Open heats, those that braved the chilly water of Boca de Pascuales included: Mario Farias and Travis Southworth and in the Bodyboarding category, Eraclio Hernandez and Alfonso Aguilar. Saturday’s heats will be heavy and Sunday we’ll see which champions will get to share $100,000,000 pesos in prizes.

OSCAR “PAWI” CHINO WINS THE FOURTH STOP OF SURFING ACAPULCO CONTEST & CLINIC

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

Oscar “Pawi” Chino prevailed by winning the fourth stop of the Surfing Acapulco Contest & Clinic that took place this past Sunday, March 9th at Los Cuates de Alex Restaurant at Playa Bonfil in Acapulco.

This fourth stop kicks off the second round of these clinics, where, with the new scores, those who have competed in both events in the open category will shoot to the top of the rankings.

For “Pawi” Chino, this is his first performance in the circuit and showed off his skill as he passed each heat in first place, winning first place at this stop. He faced off in the final against Marcos Candela, Vicente “Chelo” Vega and the “king” of the waves, Rey Hernandez. The match was a good one and his opponents have raised the level of their tricks, showing higher degrees of difficulty that included aerials and reverse aerials, like the one that Rey Hernandez caught that brought him the highest score of the heat. Unfortunately, Hernandez committed interference, which subtracted points from his road to victory. Candela was the closest to this objective, followed by good tricks performed by “Chelo” Vega, at just 17 years old.

Since the competition was comprised of an open category, competitors between the ages of 15 to 46 competed. “Poseidon” was very accommodating that day, sending waves of up to 5 feet that most surfers took advantage of. Two other favorites fell by the wayside, including: Brandon Cabrera and Miguel Roque.

Amazing Fifth Annual Punta Sayulita Longboard And Sup Classic 2014

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

This past weekend, for the fifth consecutive year in a row, one of the best longboarding and SUP events in Mexico took place in the magical town of Sayulita, Nayarit.

The surfing community gathered to enjoy this great show that the Punta Sayulita Classic offered. Competitors from various countries participated in the fifth edition, making it more exciting and challenging for local Mexican surfers.

We saw several of the prominent national and world championship surfers compete, several of whom had given everyone the satisfaction and joy of seeing Mexico win their first medals in the recent World Games. Now, the “bronze race” defended their beach in this new battle, the Sayulita Classic.

Three days of intense activities were held, in addition to the main event—the competitions that included the participation of kids all the way to adults. The icing on the cake was the participation of the women in the competition, as families came to the beach to support their favorites.

The ECO-Warrior Foundation gathered kids and families on the beach to create environmental awareness by cleaning up the beach, while Integral Family Development (DIF, for its initials in Spanish) participated by bringing kids with special needs to the Surf Clinics that were given by professionals in their field. There was also a live concert featuring G. Love & Special Sauce that was held as a benefit presentation.
