Mercedes-Benz Technology Serving Garrett Mcnamara

Perhaps for many it may seem “weird”, but nevertheless the word is out about the association of big-wave surfer, Garrett McNamara and automaker, Mercedes-Benz, which has designed special surfboards for McNamara to ride the powerful waves of Praia do Norte in Nazare, Portugal.
“I really want to test the technology behind this surfboard. I’m stoked that there’s finally a board that’s made to surf the waves at full speed.”

The “Project MBoard”, has created four special edition surfboards called “The Silver Arrows of the Sea”, elegant boards with the brand’s logo and McNamara’s signature on them. Some critics are calling it a mere marketing stunt rather than a surfboard innovation, but perhaps this is a glimpse of the future of surfing technology; it all depends on how you look at it.

Huanchaco Longboard Pro Opens The Asp World Longboarding Championship

The first date of the ASP World Qualifying Longboard Series will take place for the fifth consecutive year in a row at El Elio Trujillo beach in Huanchaco, Peru on February 12th – 14th, 2014 and will be giving away $12,500 dollars in prizes. In previous editions, the Brazilians have clearly dominated and the only Peruvian competitor that has fought back hard enough to win has been Piccolo Clemente. This year, the event will also be the first date of the Women’s category, which will award $2,500 in prizes.

HISTORY OF HUANCHACO
Huanchaco is considered the birthplace of surfing in Peru. It is believed that approximately 3,000 years ago, ancient fishermen navigated the waves with canoes called “Totora Horses”, which still exist to this day. The Peruvian government recently approved a national law to protect ocean breaks for surfers and created the Promotion Commission of Peru for Exportation and Tourism with the intention of converting the country into a “Surfer’s Paradise”.

Huanchaco is the fifth beach elected and protected as a World Surfing Reserve under the “Save the Waves Coalition”. Last October, the spot met the necessary criteria to join this short list of the best places in the world to surf, as it has the quality and wave consistency, the unique environmental characteristics, surfing culture and history, as well as the support of the local community. Before Huanchaco, the only beaches with the seal of the “World Surfing Reserve” included the beaches of Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, Ericeira in Portugal and Manly Beach in Australia.

Success At The Second Acapulco Surfing Contest & Clinic

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

This Saturday and Sunday, the second stop of the Acapulco Surfing Contest & Clinic, was met with great success at Playa Bonfil. On Saturday, bodyboarding activities took place that enthusiasts could follow on the event’s facebook page “Surfing Acapulco” (since the maximum number of event participants was limited to sixteen).

Before the event, the heats were announced and all of the teams from around the area, including: El Centro, Shit Point, Coloso, Revolcadero, El Muelle, Bonfil and La Barra Vieja, were ready. To jumpstart the day, the two-time National Champion, Angel “Atom” Roman, and the experienced Manuel Rios and Joe Estrada gave directions, the rules of competition, tips, as well as advice to do well, both in and out of the competition.

Unfortunately, the wave conditions weren’t very good and the waves reached a mere three feet in height and had little strength. But this sport, although it relies heavily on nature, can be tried in any condition.

On Sunday, the Girls and Under-16 Shortboard categories kicked off and enjoyed much better conditions, with 4-foot tubes that provided an ideal stage for showing off their skills. It’s great to see that more girls are getting involved in this sport and having fun with it, these clinics will undoubtedly help to improve their performance.

The project will also have the backing of the Guerrero State Surfing Association and other enthusiastic surfers that have offered their support. It’s also great to see that the parents are taking their kids to practice and helping to teach them surfing; it’s a good experience for everyone.

We would like to thank Los Cuates de Alex Restaurant for all their support in making this event possible.

2014 Volcom Pipe Pro Goes To Kelly Slater!

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

11-Time World Champion, Kelly Slater, is once again the king of Pipeline, winning the 2014 Volcom Pipe Pro. This win gives Slater an excellent start of this year as he goes on in pursuit of his twelfth championship win, though many have continued to doubt him and have even spoken of his retirement.

At nearly 42 years of age, Kelly Slater started this competition off strong, finishing with five of the ten best scores of the competition, including a perfect 10. These were his best scores: 10, 9.83, 9.77, 9.73 and 9.53. He also obtained the highest score for his best two waves, giving him a score of 19.77 out of 20 possible points (Round 32).

“Pipeline brings back good memories. I came here when I was 12; I met Joey Buran and won the Pipe Masters in 1984. I came down here to see and take the first wave, this powerful cannon that spits you out, and then felt this great tube... This whole other world opened up for me that day. I fell in love with Pipeline at that moment and it’s been one of my favorite waves since. The challenge never stops. There were definitely waves today that I would have liked to have gotten, but just couldn’t find a way to do it.”

During the final, Kelly advanced quickly, overpowering Brazilian competitors, Wiggoly Dantas and Adriano de Souza, and Hawaiian competitor, Mason Ho. In the end, Dantas managed to place second, beating out local Mason Ho, while Adriano de Souza was only able to catch one really good wave and ended up in fourth place.

FINAL RESULTS

1. Kelly Slater USA    15.70    2,000 Pts.          $20,000
2. Wiggoly Dantas BRA    13.70    1,500 Pts.    $10,000

4. Adriano De Souza BRA    10.70    984 Pts.    $5,500
