Asp announces modification of the 2014 qualification system: the separation of the WTC and WQS

1Translation: Heido Sundstrom

Elite competitor, Kieren Perrow, has been named ASP Commissioner and among the new rules for the 2014 period is the complete qualification separation for the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) and the ASP Qualification Series (QS), with ASP WCT results counting exclusively for the ASP WCT ranking and the ASP Prime and Star results counting exclusively for the ASP QS qualification; a departure from recent years of a combined system of classification.

“The adjustments and modifications that have been made to the technical aspects of this sport in the last few years have become a guiding principle to create a fair and balanced platform to improve surfing... The combined ranking had its purpose during its time on tour, but the Commissioner’s office felt that a separate classification in the best route to follow,” Perrow said.

This change will alter the qualifying process for the elite 2015 ASP WCT, but the composition of the ASP Top 34 will remain the same:

2015 ASP – Top 34
-    Top 22 competitors of the 2014 ASP WCT Ranking (Top 9 of 11 WCT results)
-    Top 10 competitors in the 2014 ASP QS (Top 5 of all QS results)
-    Two ASP Wildcards

The first competitions of the ASP World Tour (WCT) season will be the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast that is set to take place on March 1st – 10th, 2014.

Winners of the first 2014 tag team sayulita emerge

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

The first Tag Team Sayulita was held in Sayulita this past Saturday, with an excellent response from the surfing and stand up paddle community. The event was a response from Sayulita Surf Club to a proposal made by Mexican longboarder, Israel Preciado, to hold a relay competition at the Sayulita Festival.

The event was conducted with the participation of about twelve teams, composed of four competitors chosen at random in a previous drawing.

The waves at Sayulita reached about one meter and the beach was packed with competitors, family members and friends who enjoyed and supported this unique event.

Competitors from all over the world, including those from Chile, Canada, the United States, England, France and, of course, Mexico, gathered on the beach, waxing their SUP boards, shortboards, longboards and Softop boards (the official boards of the event).

The teams all wore a shirt with a number on it that was assigned to each team. The first competitor catches a wave, and then hits the hand of their next teammate (Tag Team), giving the green light to catch the next wave. All of this takes place in heats that last a total of thirty minutes.

The teams were composed of competitors that ranged in age from six to forty-five years old.

A few of the first Tag Team participants included:

Jose Manuel Ticus, Diego Cadena, Dylan Southworth, Diego Mignot, Nome Mignot, Marcos Mignot, Karen Jacobson, Kalle Carranza, Eño James, Ori Icaza, Risa Mara Machuca, Javier “El Bicho” Jimenez, Sergio Gonzalez, Patricio Gonzalez, Ulises Gonzalez, Saul Pato Cadena, Leila Takeda, Isidro Rodriguez, Ryan Helm and Enzo, the youngest.

Champion Team:
- OLIVER CRUZ
- OSMAR PEREZ
- JOSE MANUEL TICUS
- JAVIER "EL BICHO" JIMENEZ

Asaya brusa and alejandra quevedo become the “first ladies”

The ladies are the first to organize a surfing event as 2014 kicks off, thanks to Jessica Selby-Spackman and Isabelle Leonhardt Arce who had the great idea of bringing all the women surfers of Mexico together.

Some thirty girls gathered at Boca de Pascuales, a beach with a powerful and tubular wave, which, on this occasion, dished out 3- 5-foot waves for the first Women’s Open. The event lasted two days and consisted of two categories: the shortboard and bodyboard, with a prize purse worth $25,000 pesos.

The “princess of Puerto Escondido”, Asaya Brusa, demonstrated her skill once again, continuing her winning streak. At 17 years old, Brusa has shown that she’s the surfer to beat, recently winning the Reef Class Mazatlan and becoming the Latin champion. She also placed first in the Puerto Escondido Open this past November and now kicks off the New Year with another win. Surf brands better turn their attention toward Brusa and support her upward trajectory. Synonymous with success, she is...the First Lady of Ladies First.

Meanwhile, in the bodyboard category, Alejandra Quevedo of Acapulco was crowned champion. Quevedo, who has just a few years of this sport under her belt, has demonstrated her ability by being the National Open Champion in this category and is starting the year off on the right foot by wining Ladies First.
