Erendira, michoacan and the 2014 national surfing champions

After five days of action, excitement, good waves and a lot of adrenaline, the Mexican National Surfing Games came to a close this past Sunday at Playa Erendira, located in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan. This event defined the Mexican National Selection that will represent Mexico in the World Games, presented by the International Surfing Association (ISA) later this year.

The event was carried out with the best state selections in the twelve categories that comprise the largest Mexican surfing championship. Teams included: Baja Norte, Baja Sur, Sinaloa, Colima, Jalisco, Veracruz, Distrito Federal, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and the host-state of Michoacan, who were the stars of this national battle.

The majority of the days were rainy or cloudy, but in the end, the sun came out and was received like a special guest of the event. The waves were always decent and of a good size, save for a few rare occasions when they were affected by the wind. The athletes had to go deep, but they came prepared and sometimes had to face another obstacle—the current.

Saturday was a marathon day and crucial for the contest. The battle for the national championship had to be faced with much intelligence during the eliminatory heats and physical condition was also important, since those that were competing in two different categories had to enter the water four times that day. Competitors were faced with the challenge of selecting the right waves and then securely hitting those waves and performing tricks with a high level of difficulty that would give them a spot in the final and a shot at being champions in the ‘Aztec nation’.

 LEGENDS

The Big Kahuna, Kahuna and Grand Master categories feature the true legends of Mexican surfing that brought the sport to Mexico in the 60’s and 70’s and who are still around to this day, not only surfing, but competing! The highlight of the event, Javier “La Charra” Hernandez, continues to be the monarch of the Grand Kahuna Over-50 category. In the Kahuna, Eddy Zamudio revalidated his crown, while Jesus Nuñez maintained the elasticity to fly, fall and continue on the wave in the Master Bodyboarding category. Heriberto “Coco” Ramirez amazingly won both the Master and Grand Master categories and dedicated his wins to Chuy Silva and “Cisco Kid” to honor their memory.

Tzahui Poo took the classic Longboard category, while Oscar “Pawi” Chino won the senior championship, Hector Sarancho took the Senior Bodyboard category and Alonso Pineda won for Drop-Knee. In women’s Bodyboarding, Alejandra Quevedo took home first place, though in that heat there weren’t the greatest waves, so the girls weren’t able to show their skills 100%.

In Women’s surfing, Kristal Hernandez, the “mermaid” of Zihuatanejo, came back with everything and took first place in a close battle against the “princess of Puerto Escondido”, Asaya Brusa, Latin American ALAS champion in Mazatlan, Isabel Leonhardt and national champion, Ana Laura Gonzalez.

Kristal Hernandez expressed her gratitude with this statement:

“Thanks so much to the Guerrero crew for their support, to my mom who is always behind me, to my boyfriend that has supported me in my sport, .to everyone for their congratulations and to my baby girl who gives me the will to continue moving forward so that she knows to never give up. I especially give thanks to God who has never left my side and has given me so many blessings.

The final for the Bodyboarding Open was a heavy one and was full of excitement, aerials and other impressive tricks. In the end, it was local Erick Osorno that took first, followed by Bryan Lopez, Daniel Diaz and Rafael Aguilar.

The icing on the cake was undoubtedly the Shortboard Open or “pro” category, whose competitors put all their energy into giving us a great show during the five-day battle to be National Champion. They broke the old adage that nobody is a prophet in their own land when local surfer, Raul “Mocho” Medina, took the championship in extremely difficult heats that had the crowd on the edge of the beach as they watched the epic final; supporting Medina with each trick he performed. The judges gave second place to Dylan Southworth, followed by Angelo Lozano and Travis Southworth—two brothers in the final.

Micha Surf School & Surfboards Celebrates Surfing Kids 2014

principal

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

On Saturday, May 17th, a surfing celebration for kids was held on the sunny sands of Acapulco, Guerrero, because one day—National Children’s Day (Aril 30th)—just isn’t enough! The kids were ready to have fun and Playa Revolcadero was ready to receive them, as were the volunteer instructors, armed with surfboards and pumped to teach these youngsters how to stand and ride their first waves.

The extra special guests arrived and were organized into one big line for a photo, the color blue of their T-shirts washing the beach like an animated wave, combining the color of the ocean with the color of the sky.

The boys and girls of Casa Hogar Infantil Marsh Children’s Home had arrived and were ready to join the celebration.

On the trampoline, you could find kids jumping high into the sky, while others played in the sand; flying Frisbees whizzed through the air and soccer balls bounced around the beach. Micha called the kids together and gave instructions on how to stand on a surfboard while the instructors assisted and, afterwards, led the kids into the water as the excitement mounted.

The instructors pushed the board as the kids paddled in order to help them catch the foam. Many of the new surfers stood on their first try, managing to find the balance needed to start their new adventure. As they continued to catch foamy waves, their faces, and the faces of the instructors themselves, were full of smiles as they clapped and gave words of encouragement to the kids that were able to stand; nothing beats the smile of a child.

Lorraine Castro brought out her brushes and painted the faces of the kids, with the assistance of Sandra “La Güera” Polidura, who, along with husband, Alfonso “Poncho” Polidura, put on their chef hats and served hot dogs to the hungry crowd that quickly gathered to enjoy the tasty treats. With her dynamic energy, Cris Rodriguez directed the team interactive games that later awarded T-shirts at the final, donated by Arturo Tamayo and Mariana Vilela; El De Surf was also present at the event.

Among other contributions to the event, the Youth Institute, directed by Ignacio Orbe, donated a cake that couldn’t be missed.

Micha Surf School & Surfboards would like to thank everybody that helped to make this event a true success. Let’s continue to make this an even greater event in the years to come. ¡Gracias Padrinos Mágicos!

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

This past Sunday, the exciting finals of the twelve categories that competed in the third edition of the Copa Universitaria de Surfing UAGro (UAGro University Surfing Cup). This state championship drew nearly one hundred competitors from Zihuatanejo and Acapulco that competed for a spot in the state surfing selection that will attend the 2014 National Surfing Games at Playa Erendira in Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan, from May 28th – June 1st, 2014.

Kristal Hernandez, from Zihuatanejo, came back with everything and will be one of the stars at the National. From his first heat until the final, Oscar “Pawi” Chino showed great qualities and gave a good competition. We hope to see his polished performance continue as he faces some of the best of Mexico surfing. National Champion, Ulises Rodriguez, is another strong player in the Bodyboarding Open and Drop-knee categories, while Alejandra Quevedo continues to reach new levels with the extreme maneuvers she performed during the contest. Fernando “Anafre” Garcia is another promising competitor, with the possibility to make it to the winner’s podium in two categories: Master’s and Longboard (his strong suit). In the Grand Kahuna category, the President of the Guerrero State Surfing Association, Javier “Charra” Hernandez, is the one to beat; of course, Guerrero always does well at the Nationals.

The University of Guerrero gave several awards and Urbano Magdaleno, Sporting Coordinator for the UAG, was present at the Closing Ceremony. Awards and prizes included: trophies and diplomas, a surfboard and bodyboard, and, of course, being selected to represent the state of Guerrero at the Nationals. The event also featured a bikini contest and at the end, a small ceremony was held to scatter the ashes of former surf contest announcer, Jose Isabel “Cisco” Hernandez, in Playa Bonfil, which was one of his last requests.
