1

This past Tuesday, the 4-Star ASP Surf Open Acapulco kicked off its second year and is set to give away $100,000 dollars in prize money. At 7:00 am sharp, the first of 16 heats began for what would be an exciting day of competition at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco.

The highlight of the day was the performance by American Chris Waring who caught a wave that gave the highest score of the day: a 9.40. Waring, a Huntington Beach local, mentioned that the wall of the wave at Revolcadero is similar to Huntington.

Another highlight was Brazilian Caetano Vargas, who gained a 9.33 right wave that let him do various hits that ended with aerials, giving him a total score of 18.20 for his two best waves.

The Hawaiian defending Champion, Tanner Hendrickson, began in the first round and managed to make it to the next round and had this to say: “I love Acapulco, I’m super happy to have won here the last year and I hope I can do it again.”

Of the Mexican surfers that saw action on this day, only two passed: Christian Corzo and Johnny Corzo, who is one of the youngest competitors at just 13 years old. Tomorrow is sure to be an exciting one.

TRUJILLO, CADENA AND HERNANDEZ GAIN THEIR PASS TO 4-STAR ASP SURF OPEN ACAPULCO

The Trials wrapped up under decent wave conditions and awarded its winners an entry into the 4-Star event of the ASP circuit, the SURF OPEN ACAPULCO, which is currently being held from July 2nd – 7th on the same beach as the Trials, Playa Revolcadero.

Interesting and very exciting duels developed at Playa Revolcadero. In the quarterfinals, Adrian “Gatito” Rodriguez from Nayarit went head-to-head with Luis Rey Hernandez, the 14-year old surfer from Guerrero. Rodriguez was ahead in points but near the end of the heat, Hernandez caught a tube and managed to come out clean and performed two additional tricks, sending Rodriguez on his way.

In the first final, Luis Rey Hernandez faced Oscar “Pawi” Chino as both locals fought for their pass to the SURF OPEN ACAPULCO. Once again, “Pawi” drew from his experience and stayed high in the scores but surprise! Hernandez caught a left wave, entered the tube and managed a clean exit, upping his points.

Luis Rey Hernandez will be the youngest competitor to participate in the ASP SURF OPEN ACAPULCO, along with Yoni Corzo, who is 15 years old.

In the other final, the two opponents, local Jose Manuel “Yuco” Trujillo and Diego Cadena from Nayarit, already had their entry into the Open but competed to determine the Champion of the Trial.

2. - DIEGO CADENA     (SAYULITA)

3. - LUIS REY HERNÁNDEZ (ACAPULCO)

4.- OSCAR “PAWI” CHINO (ACAPULCO)

DILLON PERILLO WINS THE 6-STAR ASP LOS CABOS OPEN OF SURF

2

Zippers Beach, Los Cabos, Southern Baja California, Mexico—After taking a break from competing and only doing “free surf”, American surfer Dillon Perillo (a prominent figure in the ASP Pro Junior Series some years ago), returned to the competitions this year and came back strong, winning his first 6-Star event, at the well-known Zippers beach in Los Cabos.

At 23 years old, Dillon achieved one of his dreams, winning a stop on the ASP tour—the Los Cabos Open of Surf...
“I don’t know what to say,” Perillo remarked. “Mexico is one of my favorite places in the world. I’ve been coming here with my dad since I was a kid. This was a good contest... I was really nervous the whole time; during the final I kept telling myself, Keep calm, keep calm and try to breathe and relax.”

With three-foot waves to contend with, Dillon faced Beyrick De Vries from South Africa in the final. Dillon advanced immediately, achieving an 8.67 and 8.47 for a mixture of maneuvers in the Zippers right break. On his second wave, Dillon got a 9.57, the highest score for a single wave in the whole event, solidifying his victory with a total of 18.24 points against the 13.84 points of De Vries.

“I feel confident and happy. I didn’t have a good start on my competitions this year, but achieving this gives me confidence for my next events, Acapulco and El Salvador. I hope to do well in both.”
