Two mexican surfers in the world longboard games in peru

The lack of budget needed to compete in the ISA world championship is why there are only two Mexicans competing this year. Patricio Gonzalez and Tzahui Poo are set to represent Mexico in the ISA World Longboard Championship (WLC), taking place in Huanchaco, Peru on September 22nd to 28th, 2013.

The event consists of three categories: Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Juniors Under 18, where the 23 participating countries will compete individually and in teams for the gold medal.

The event kicked off with the traditional parade of teams down the main street and in front of the beach the historic Huanchaco “Caballitos de Totora” (cane fishing boats)
were all lined up. You could see the 6’ – 8’ swell looked very promising for the competition.

On the first day of competition, Mexicans Patricio Gonzalez and Tzahui Poo passed in second place below two Australians. Unfortunately, on the second day of competition both lost, but they remain in the competition for the group playoffs.

These events consist of “double elimination”, with the first two surfers always advancing to the second qualifying round. The third and fourth place finishers move on to the re-match round, giving them a second chance to advance. However, if they get another third or fourth place, they’re out of the competition.

Obviously Mexico will be in one of the last places since they don’t have a complete team, but it’s important to always be present.

The ISA President Continues To Advocate Surfing In The Olympic Movement

La Jolla, California, September 10, 2013 - Thomas Bach of Germany has been elected the ninth President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Jacques Rogge, the outgoing IOC President, whose 12-year term has ended, announced that the members had elected a new President after two rounds of voting.

Bach's experience as an Olympic Gold Medalist in 1976 in Fencing, IOC Member, and German National Olympic Committee President has prepared him to lead the IOC.

"Thank you very much to all of you," said the new IOC President Thomas Bach in a press release from the IOC today. "Let us, this great universal orchestra of IOC members, play together in harmony towards a bright future for the Olympic Movement under the leadership of the IOC."

Bach has called for more deliberation and debate among IOC members and flexibility in the way cities bid for the Games as well as the way the IOC selects sports for the Olympic program.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre, in his native country, Argentina, for the IOC Session, met with Bach prior to his election as part of his ongoing efforts on behalf of Olympic Surfing.

311"As an Olympian and proven leader in the Olympic Movement, Thomas Bach has earned the respect and support of his colleagues to lead the IOC," remarked ISA President Fernando Aguerre. "On behalf of the 35 million surfers on five continents, we offer our sincere congratulations to President Bach and best wishes for his important mission ahead. We are excited and eager to work with President Bach and his team going forward and to continue to offer our sport of surfing as a way to strengthen the Olympic Movement."

Under Aguerre's leadership, the ISA is building its credentials and relationships with Olympic Movement organizations and leaders. Aguerre was recently elected Vice-President of ARISF, the organization of International Sports Federations that have been recognized by the IOC. He has also been meeting with IOC Members and other influential sport leaders as part of the campaign to fulfill the goal of the modern day 'Father of Surfing," 4-times Olympic Swimming gold medalist, Duke Kahanamoku, who began supporting the idea for Olympic Surfing more than 100 years ago.

New champions at the 2013 national surfing games in rosarito

Translation: Heido Sundstrom

The 2013 National Surfing Games in Rosarito came to a successful and well-organized close at the beach by the pier of this Baja California tourist destination.

During five days of competition, the best state selections from Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Colima, Jalisco, Michoacan, Distrito Federal, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Guerrero, Quintana Roo and the hosts, Baja California, heated up the cold waters of Rosarito.

The emergence of new national champions, others that returned again in excellent shape and the small difference of points between first and second place demonstrated how close the competition truly was. There was a high level of surfing in the heats and, why not, seeing as how the “cream of the surfing crop” was there to compete in major categories.

Diego Cadena is, without a doubt, one of the best athletes that Mexico has. He took the heaviest category, the “Open”, followed by another great, Angelo Lozano. To the surprise of many, however, the highlights of the competition ended up Mario Farias and Mike Velasco.

In the “Women’s” category, Leila Takeda just wasn’t able to maintain her champion title, which Pam Verboonen nabbed rather easily with a five-point lead, sending Takeda to second place.

Raul Medina took the “Senior’s” category, while “El Tigre” roared again and took first place in the “Master’s” category. Hugo Camacho won his first national title in the “Grand Master’s” category and, winning both categories of Mexican surfing legends, the “Kahuna” and “Grand Kahuna”, the illustrious Javier “Charra” Hernandez took the gold.

Itzahui Poo placed first in the “Longboard” category, and for the bodyboarders, Ulises Rodriguez won in both the “Open” and the “Drop-knee” category. Legendary Kenia Leon triumphed over Alejandra Quevedo, who debuted in national competitions. Among the bodyboarding legends, Moises Valdez beat Jesus Nunez, Hector Saracho and Miguel Torres.

A very impressive finish for the athletes that competed in two categories, demonstrating their excellent physical and mental condition to face the best in their category and withstand the climatic conditions of Rosarito that many are unaccustomed to, as they normally surf in warmer waters.

As Rosarito says, “Hasta pronto!” Acapulco and Los Cabos say, “Welcome!” to the National Children and Youth Surf Games and the National Bodyboard Games that will take place in the month of October.
