The lack of budget needed to compete in the ISA world championship is why there are only two Mexicans competing this year. Patricio Gonzalez and Tzahui Poo are set to represent Mexico in the ISA World Longboard Championship (WLC), taking place in Huanchaco, Peru on September 22nd to 28th, 2013.

The event consists of three categories: Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Juniors Under 18, where the 23 participating countries will compete individually and in teams for the gold medal.

The event kicked off with the traditional parade of teams down the main street and in front of the beach the historic Huanchaco “Caballitos de Totora” (cane fishing boats)
were all lined up. You could see the 6’ – 8’ swell looked very promising for the competition.

On the first day of competition, Mexicans Patricio Gonzalez and Tzahui Poo passed in second place below two Australians. Unfortunately, on the second day of competition both lost, but they remain in the competition for the group playoffs.

These events consist of “double elimination”, with the first two surfers always advancing to the second qualifying round. The third and fourth place finishers move on to the re-match round, giving them a second chance to advance. However, if they get another third or fourth place, they’re out of the competition.

Obviously Mexico will be in one of the last places since they don’t have a complete team, but it’s important to always be present.
