The wait is overthe wthe wait is over! On sunday, january 20th, the mavericks

mavericksOrganizers for the Mavericks 2012 – 2013 event, the world renown big-wave surf contest presented by GoPro, has confirmed that the event will take place on Sunday, January 20th, 2013 at 8:00 am (local time) in Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, CA. The contest has been on hold since 2010, due to the lack of quality waves for which the contest was created. This year is shaping up a little differently, however...

“The waves are going to be crazy, the weather will be beautiful and the level of surfing will open new paths. It’s going to be a real show,” said Mavericks’ Contest Director, Jeff Clark.
Meteorologist Marcos Sponsler declared, “This is looking like the best chance we’ve had in several years, and the best conditions, for the functioning of the competition.”

“This swell will offer enormous waves and perfect conditions. It is a very strong swell and we’re going to have dramatic conditions that push the competitors to their limits.”

The Mavericks Invitational Festival is an event parallel to the surf contest, held in an open-air setting that starts at 8:00 am, coinciding with the first heat of the competition. The festival will last all day and will include all the action from the contest. Festivalgoers can enjoy a day of music, live-commentary, food, beer, the Mavericks’ Photo Gallery, and the opportunity to mingle with competitors. As soon as the final heat draws to a close, all the action in the water will move to the Festival, where the surfers will gather for the awards ceremony. The event will last until sunset.

With great sadness, I must inform you of the tragic loss of one of our dear friends. Jorge “Chori” Lopez Vives was killed on Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. on the island of Cozumel in a stunt airplane crash. I feel very saddened by the sudden loss of this great man. Those who knew him could always find a smile on his face and in his heart. He really knew what it meant to fight tooth and nail for your dreams and spent years fighting to have a program dedicated to extreme sports on Televisa. When he finally got his dream and was at the height of his career...he left us.

I saw him for the last time this past Monday, January 14th on the set of Adrenalina Xtreme and, like always, he was optimistic and full of smiles. He even commented to me that he’d been using the Planeta Surf wallet I had given him and that he loved it, which really touched me.

He was such a good person, this Chori, and it’s really a shame to have lost him.

Tonight, I’d like to ask all of you to light a candle and raise a prayer on Chori’s behalf, to light his way (to the place where we’re all go eventually).

At least Chori left this world—like all the GREAT ones have—doing what he loved...

Intro Chuy Silva

The Mexican surf community mourns the sad and sudden loss of Jesus “Chuy” Silva, who was killed in the early hours of Sunday, January 13th, 2013 in a motorcycle accident. Chuy was a very happy and humble person and an excellent bodyboarder. He loved surfing his home break “Zicatela” in Puerto Escondido and leaves behind a legacy for the whole Mexican surf community. May he rest in peace.

Here you’ll find some notes written by Chuy on early 2011

Here we leave some notes written by Chuy in early 2011.

I am Jesús Silva Cabrera I am 24 years old and I am a professional bodyboarder. Ran my first wave at the age of 4 years when my dad got him the idea of teaching me to surf and tossing on the waves. I was born in Puerto Escondido, I am the second child of 3 that my parents had. It was not until the age of 14 when he was at high school who was born in my desire to practice the bodyboard.

2I had earlier tried other sports as football, karate, swimming, etc. But nothing caught my attention as the bodyboard. My first tournament that I entered was the aroma divine-mexpipe junior in 2000 in which I stayed in 6 place, since that tournament started to like me competencies.

I am a LIC. In the teaching of languages also and during that while I was studying in the city of Oaxaca stopped competing and surf for 2 years. After having obtained good grades lol decided to return to the competencies of the bodyboard and it was in 2008 when I won the State selective, that same year we went to the national tournament of Rio Nexpa Michoacán in which I got the 1st place. In 2009 I was again as a national champion in the closing of the national circuit here in puerto escondido.

3.4.2In 2010 stayed second place nationally in the national tournament of Mazatlan. In this year also went to the tournament of Surfing on the Border in the city of Tijuana, beating the best of the world 2009 Jeff Hubbard and also

WHO’S NEXT?

1In search of the next generation of young surfers, the Sayulita Surf Club, with the support of the Nayarit Association of Surfing, organized a children’s surf contest on January 5th & 6th, which coincided with the favorite holiday, “Dia de Reyes” (Three Kings Day).

It was a gathering of races that spoke just one language—surfing and all possessed the same goal: to have fun in the small waves of Sayulita Beach, a beach that has brought up many top-level athletes. The next generation is securing its place with these kinds of events, which promote, support and give space to young surfers who compete, not for a cash-prize, but for the mere fact of being there in the contest among friends and other local surfers.

These kids and young people rose anxiously before the contest, not to see the prizes but to get prepared and go to the beach and share the waves, the magical wave of the Kings that calls all children born here to come to the water, surfboards in hand.
