Guerrero State surfing selection contest

1By: Isaac Avila
Translation: Heido Sundstrom

This past weekend, the first event organized by the newly created Guerrero State Surfing Association was held at Playa Punto Muerto in Acapulco. This event had more than 60 competitors from all over the state, including surfers from Petatlan, Zihuatenajo and locals from Acapulco, who were divided into seven categories.

Though the waves did little to help, as they were small in size at one to two meters, the quality of the competition was good and the competitors exhibited their best tricks. Those from Acapulco clearly dominated their heats and won in several categories. Highlights of the event included the current junior champion, Luis Rey Hernandez, who won the Under 14 and Under 18 categories, while Oscar “Pawi” Chino took the Senior category as well as the most coveted and heaviest category: the Open.

At a recent press conference, the new board members of the Guerrero State Surfing Association announced their plan of action for the 2012 – 2016 term. Experienced surfer and national champion in multiple categories, Javier “Charra” Hernandez, is the newly elected leader of the Association; this is part of their plan:

-    The development of an annual work plan that considers all possible events and activities to carry out.

-    Credentialing of the entire surfing community for the state they are affiliated with.

-    Register with the Hacienda to be able to issue tax-deductible receipts to sponsors.

-    Commit not to profit in any way from the activities of the Association. Any funds gained will be used for the purpose of supporting community champions to participate in official tournaments and to live amongst the surfing community.

-    Negotiate with the competent authority the possibility of opening a space on the beach for the activities of the Association.

-    Organize a “cevichada” to gather as many surfers as we can to let them know about the project and get them involved by organizing clubs.

-    Establish a code of conduct to be followed by all associations.

-    Find equipment to carry out events.

-    Form a state directory of members.

Fernando stalla bronze medal in career long in the World Games 2013 Peru sup.

fernando1Fernando Stalla makes history by being third in the race Marathon of the World SUP and Paddleboard Championship in Peru, and win the first bronze medal for Mexico in these games. No doubt greater expectations were with him, in extremely difficult conditions, with fog and a little difference of seconds separated the first four places in the competition. Very exciting career in its final minutes, see them go fog when they turned to the buoy and went towards the beach, "Vamos Mexico!", said. "!!!" His teammate, Javier Jiménez, did another good job left in the seventh position.

The President of the ISA, Fernando Aguerre, said: "athletes faced difficult conditions and with a dense fog, but fought against this and gave a great show. The champions of last year fought hard to defend their titles, but it is equally impressive to see new faces emerging in surf and Board racing. This demonstrates how the sport has developed in a short time, partially as a result of the SUP Championship and last year ISA Paddleboard".

Long race, distance male SUP
Gold - Jamie Mitchell (AUS) - 2:32:01
Silver - Casper Steinfath (DEN) - 2:32:03
Bronze - Fernando Stalla (MEX) - 2:32:04
