WHO’S NEXT?
Translation: Heido Sundstrom
In search of the next generation of young surfers, the Sayulita Surf Club, with the support of the Nayarit Association of Surfing, organized a children’s surf contest on January 5th & 6th, which coincided with the favorite holiday, “Dia de Reyes” (Three Kings Day).
It was a gathering of races that spoke just one language—surfing and all possessed the same goal: to have fun in the small waves of Sayulita Beach, a beach that has brought up many top-level athletes. The next generation is securing its place with these kinds of events, which promote, support and give space to young surfers who compete, not for a cash-prize, but for the mere fact of being there in the contest among friends and other local surfers.
These kids and young people rose anxiously before the contest, not to see the prizes but to get prepared and go to the beach and share the waves, the magical wave of the Kings that calls all children born here to come to the water, surfboards in hand.
