Zicatela Point Beach
La Punta de Zicatela is located south of Puerto Escondido, just 10 minutes from downtown. Access is open to the public and buses or colectivos can be taken from downtown that only cost $5 pesos. There are also taxis available in case you’re bringing your board. Those cost between $30 – $35 pesos and drop you off about 20 meters from the beach.
The quality of the waves makes them classics of the region. This spot is a point-break and the waves always break to the left. The bottom consists of rock and sand, which makes the waves hollow, fast and fun. This beach has two sections, the second one being the longer one. When a good swell occurs, waves can travel more than 200 meters and get to be about 15 feet tall, which you can surf in about a minute.
La Punta de Zicatela is a fun choice and is easily accessible (just be careful around the urchins and rocks that cover the ocean floor). This beach is also used a lot by surf instructors for its optimum conditions when giving their classes to those wanting to experiment this extreme sport and have, above all, contact with nature mixed with the adrenaline that comes from catching a good wave.
The climate in this area of Puerto Escondido is tropical and warm all year round. The ocean water is also quite warm, except between the months of December and January. The nights are cool, while average temperatures during the day can reach between 80 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
A few years ago, La Punta de Zicatela was a forest of Acacias and Mesquites full of greenery, today it’s a lively community that’s quiet and set apart from the noise. Here, you’ll also find endless restaurants where you can taste all kinds of Oaxacan cuisine to top off a good surf session.
